In this session, we'll dissect and inspect Darshan's re-sampling of several traditional and modern recordings of the song Chad Gadya, and study the text of a rapper's retelling. Meet the artists behind this midrashic mash-up. Shir Yaakov is a Master of Melody who has given birth to hauntingly
beautiful liturgical chants, used in havurot and synagogues around the
world. Eprhyme is a Radical Jewish Renaissance Rapper. Together they
create something altogether new, and at the same time ancient. Deep
and probing rhymes blend with evocative and uplifting melodies in "an
uncompromising blend of urban forms and neo-Hasidic spirituality." —The
Forward. Unorthodox Revolutions: Combating Violence Against Women and Women’s Empowerment in Traditional Societies with Aida Touma-Suliman and Chana Kehat, feminist activists in Israel In 1998, Chana Kehat established Kolech: The Religious
Women’s Forum, which works to promote women’s rights from within
Orthodoxy. The organization fights on behalf of “chained” and abused
women, speaks out against the Rabbinate on issues of women’s rights,
and promotes increased religious roles for women. In 1992, Aida Touma-Suliman founded Women Against Violence (WAV) in Nazareth. WAV initially focused
exclusively on the problem of violence against women in the Arab
Israeli community, but expanded its mission to include promoting
women's involvement in the public and political centers of influence. Through
videos and discussion, learn about these two remarkable women, and some
of the similarities and dissimilarities of their work in traditional
environments. Aida Touma-Suliman is the founder of Women Against Violence (WAV) in Nazareth. Chana Kehat is the founder of Kolech: The Religious Women's Forum. Both women are pioneers of feminism in their commmunities. The Wandering Aramean with Rabbi David Silber
The midrash of the wandering Aramean is one of the central texts in the Haggadah. Through a
close reading of this text, we will come to better understand its meaning. Participants will leave with a new perspective to help add meaning
to their seder. David Silber is the Founder
and Dean of Drisha Institute for Jewish Education. He received ordination from
the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary. In 2000, he was recognized with a Covenant Award for Outstanding Jewish Educators. Seeing Yourself and Telling Others: The Haggadah's Educational Vision with Rabbi Mishael Zion Following the destruction of the Temple, the Rabbis were faced with the
challenge of recreating the holiday of Pesach without its sacrificial
center. Through a study of selections from the Mishnah and Talmud, we
will explore the ways in which the Rabbis turned the seder into a night
of identity, education and family and suggest ways to bring that spirit to our own seder.
Mishael Zion is the co-author of the best-selling Israeli Haggadah HaLaila
HaZeh, and of the new A Night to Remember: The Haggadah of Contemporary
Voices. He is a Faculty Fellow at the Skirball Center for Adult Jewish
Learning and studies at Yeshivat Chovevei Torah Rabbinical School.
