The Search for Josef Mengele
with David Marwell, Director of the Museum of Jewish Heritage

Museum Director David Marwell will describe the international manhunt and forensic investigation into the whereabouts and identification of the infamous Auschwitz doctor. Illustrated with unpublished photographs and documents, this talk will take you behind the scenes of one of the largest and most complex historical investigations ever undertaken.

David G. Marwell, Ph.D. served as the Chief of Investigative Research at the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Special Investigations, where he conducted historical research in support of prosecution of Nazi war criminals living in the United States. He also played a major role in the Justice Department’s investigations of Klaus Barbie and Josef Mengele. He is the director of the Museum of Jewish Heritage.

One Language: Chavruta Text Study (Paired Learning)
with Jennifer Krause, author of The Answer: Making Sense of Life, One Question at a Time

Chavruta means "partnership" and involves two people with similar levels of ability and knowledge exploring texts together. We will examine ancient sources, modern scholarship, song lyrics and more, all centered on the theme of one Jewish language. Everyone is welcome, whether you have studied texts before or not. Knowledge of Hebrew is not required. Bring a study partner, or we’ll find one for you.

Jennifer Krause is a Limmud NY past presenter and ongoing volunteer. The author of The Answer: Making Sense of Life, One Question at a Time (Penguin), her writing and commentary also have been featured in Newsweek, the New York Times, The Huffington Post, The Daily Beast, and O, The Oprah Magazine.  Jennifer serves as an adjunct lecturer in Jewish Studies at the City College of New York and as the High Holidays rabbi at Manhattan's 92nd Street Y.

Highlights of the Museum Exhibition Tour
with docents from the Museum of Jewish Heritage

Don't miss this opportunity to experience a guided tour showcasing an overview of 20th century Jewish life and a chance to view some of the most treasured artifacts in the Museum. This tour will also include a visit to the Holocaust Exhibit.

The Museum of Jewish Heritage is at once a museum devoted to the exploration of Jewish heritage and a living memorial to the Holocaust. Its exhibits depict in detail the lives and communities that shaped Jewish culture in the early part of the century; tell the story of the Holocaust from the perspective of those who experienced it; and share the sense of determination and courage that shaped the renewal of Jewish life after the war.

Reading Between the Lines, Panels, Pictures and Verses: Discover the Relationship Between Midrash, Bibliodrama and Comic Books
with David Wolkin, educator at Congregation Emanu-El and performer

Just as the study of Torah requires interpretation, reading comics asks us to think of what has been left unsaid, exploring the spaces in between what the story is telling us in order to achieve a greater sense of understanding and meaning. At this session, we'll explore the relationship between the comics medium and midrash by using theatrical exercises in order to put ourselves into those "in between spaces" of the Torah.

David Wolkin is the Coordinator of Elementary and Family Learning at Congregation Emanu-El of the City of New York. He received an M.A. in Jewish Education from the Jewish Theological Seminary in 2007. In addition to his synagogue work, he has been a proud  member of Storahtelling, a NY-based Jewish ritual theater company, having worked for them as both a performer and an educator. He also occasionally writes and performs comedic monologues at New York venues including Mo Pitkin's, Galapagos, The Slipper Room and the Rapture Cafe. He spends the rest of his time trying to figure out how to convince as many people as possible that comic books are the finest form of literature today.

Food for Thought: The New Jewish Food Movement
with Avigail Hurvitz-Prinz, educator at Hazon

As a professional Jewish foodie, Avigail counts her blessings every day. As a program associate on Hazon's food programs she thinks about defining kosher (fit to eat) food as informed by the works of Michael Pollan and other Rebbes. When she isn't baking cakes she's often blogging about the cakes she's baked on jcarrot.org. She helps to coordinate Hazon's CSA Program, Tuv Ha'Aretz, and Hazon's Food Conference.
